Make a Valentine for Mom: Digital Cameras Make it Easy for Kids to Preserve Memories

(ARA) - Digital photography is fast emerging as a popular family-friendly hobby. A recent survey of 1,500 parents and children conducted by Harris Interactive found that almost nine in 10 kids are enthusiastic about engaging in projects with their parents that involve technology, such as using digital photos to create greeting cards.

Children are fascinated by photography. They wont settle for simply having their pictures taken. They want to grab the camera and start snapping away themselves. But if youre a parent with an expensive digital camera, you may hesitate to hand it over.

Those who question the wisdom of sharing their camera with young children may be reassured by a recent nursery school project in Scotland. A classroom of four-year-olds was given digital cameras for an entire semester. Although the purpose of the program was enabling the kids to produce a visual record of their activities and experiences while also developing their technology skills, it served another function.

Snapping photos made the afternoon challenge of energizing weary four-year-olds much easier. One teacher commented that when the kids looked a little droopy and their attention wandered, she brought out the cameras. The children enthusiastically started clicking away. They even learned how to upload photos to the computer and share them with friends. According to the teacher, there were benefits beyond providing an introduction to online technology. The children learned to take turns and cooperate and developed their aesthetic and artistic abilities.

Families using traditional film cameras can still take advantage of the benefits of digital photography by using an online photo service. One San Francisco mother armed her kids with disposable cameras and let them roam the house, snapping candid photos of whatever they fancied, whether it was mom at the computer, the cats nap in the sunshine or baby brothers bath in the kitchen sink. At days end, the mother collected the cameras and mailed them to Shutterfly (shutterfly.com), a leading online photo service.

Once the photos were uploaded to her Shutterfly account, mom received an email and she and her children went online to select only their favorites. The days of processing all 24 prints to reveal the prized good ones are in the past. Using simple-to-use Shutterfly tools, together the mom and her children added creative borders and personal captions, and even transformed color photos into black-and-white. For less than ten dollars, the result was a Shutterfly Snapbook, a spiral bound photo album thats delivered home, or can be mailed directly to doting grandparents as a gift.

Digital photography just might be the answer to preserve those precious family memories.

Fenix L2T 3 Watt 2 AA Luxeon LED High Output Mini Flashlight - 55 Lumens

Fenix L2T 3 Watt 2 AA Luxeon LED High Output Mini Flashlight - 55 Lumens
Two levels of output, selected by turning the bezel (patented). Toughened ultra clear glass lens. Fenix L2 achieves its perfection by design, being high-brightness, power-saving, compact, tough and pleasant in look. It can serve as your reliable pal in life, as well as your best choice for collection purposes or as a gift. Unlike traditional flashlights which dim considerably as the batteries wears down, a fully regulated circuit enables the Fenix L2 to maintain near maximum brightness as its battery's voltage decreases. Note: The input voltage of Fenix L2T is 0.9V to 4.0V.

Customer Review: Great light.

Fantastic light. Absolutely fantastic. I want more. Don't need more. Want more. It's as bright as my Surefire G2, and it runs off AA's to boot.

Customer Review: Fenix L2T comments

This flashlight has been in almost daily operation for about a month. On high power, it is VERY good. However, like a previous reviewer, I have the flickering problem. This occurred a few weeks after usage. Blowing out the "head" with compressed air partially cleared this flickering - it appears that aluminum filings from rotating the head (full power to low power) are causing intermittent shorts, thus causing the flicker from full to low power. This is shoddy manufacturing by Fenix. Amazon is willing to refund the cost the light, but I really like the light so I'm keeping it.

Lenmar DLC4L Lithium-ion Digital Camera/Camcorder Battery Equivelent to the Canon NB-4L Battery
lithium ion battery * compatible with select Canon Digital ELPH cameras including the PowerShot SD200, PowerShot SD300, PowerShot SD400, and PowerShot SD450 * rated capacity: 3.7V, 760mAh *

Customer Review: Very Pleased

Works great in my canon SD 750. Given the price, it is a good deal.

Customer Review: might need a higher power battery

I got a couple of these to supplement the one cannon battery that came with my TX1. It seems to me they are some what underpowered. I can use one in a day with out trying too hard. It might be that the video mode on the camera is a big drain on the battery.

I'm comparing this battery to the ones I use on my EOS, which seem to last weeks between charges, but it might not be fair as it has no video mode..

This battery is only 760mAh, I'd probably go for at least a 900 next time..

Kodak EasyShare SV-710 7-Inch Digital Picture Frame

Kodak EasyShare SV-710 7-Inch Digital Picture Frame
Customer Review: This is perfect!

I love this thing! I bought it as a gift for my dad, and now everyone wants one! I bought a card for it (the one that Amazon suggests with it), and had no problem using the USB cable to copy photos from my computer onto the card. I love the slideshow feature - although I have 2 minor complaints:

1. The slideshow doesn't have a random option (at least that I know of), so it only play in the order you put the photos onto the card. I handled this by mixing up the photos as I copied them onto the card.

2. It doesn't adjust portrait photos that are saved in a landscape form. So, in order for the portrait photos to show correctly, you have to save it in portrait form on your computer before copying it to the card. If you don't, portrait photos show sideways.

I'm not sure why some people complain about this frame. For what I was using it for (as a gift) - copying photos from my computer to a card using the USB cable, it worked perfectly! The photos look fabulous on this frame, and it's super simple to use! I will be buying more in the future!

Customer Review: Digital Picture Frame

Very happy with the look of this frame...also good picture quality and interesting patterns when pictures change. I didn't realize there was no memory on the frame itself but it is relatively easy to upload pictures to the Compact Flash disk.

Kodak EasyShare C613 6.2MP Digital Camera with 3x Optical Zoom
A lifetime of memories captured on one compact camera. Kodak's 6.2MP digital camera lets you take stunning photos with simple point-and-shoot ease. KODAK Color Science ensures bright, beautiful color, while a 3X optical zoom gets you closer without compromising picture quality. Limited warranty. Model C613.

Customer Review: Easy to Use

My mother wanted to buy a digital camera - her first - for an upcoming trip to Peru, and the lens on my third digital camera - a Sony - was broken and would cost more to fix than to replace it with a new point-and-shoot. We both ended up buying the Kodak EasyShare C613, and are both happy with our purchases. I find the camera super easy to use. The pictures are clean and crisp, and it's just what I want for a nice little camera. Mom's off to Peru and enjoying her Kodak, too.

Customer Review: Nice camera for the money

This camera takes nice pictures and is easy for a "newbie" to operate. The only thing I don't like is the shutter botton is so small~~guess I have to get use to that!! Otherwise I would recommend it.
