1. Get on Their Level - With a live subject it is important to get at eye-level before taking the shot. For children and pets this may mean kneeling, squatting, sitting or even lying down to get on the same level as your subject. While it is fun to experiment with different angles, you will have much greater success if you look your subject in the eye.
2. Fill out the Frame - Photographs are more powerful and interesting if the subject fills out the frame. Many photographers make the mistake of being too far from the subject. It is best to zoom in close enough the that the subject reaches or goes just beyond the edges of the photo frame in your view finder. This allows the viewer to see more detail and expression, and prevents the background from taking over the photograph.

The author does a particularly good job of discussing both the similarities and the differences in film and digital camera techniques including dealing with sensor artifact repair and sensor noise. As the leading professional digital photography software most of the examples are detailed using Photoshop. Using this product Stephen Johnson discusses how and why to adjust tone and contrast, color correction and editing, changing hue and saturation, and photographic reproduction.
Throughout the book are beautiful examples of the techniques being presented including realistic photography, sensor matched techniques, scanning camera photography, and photography as art. For a beginning astrophotographer or one with the interest, this book excels. It covers every aspect from A to Z including required equipment and software to optional equipment and software. I feel that 70-75% of this book is geared towards beginners.
Intermediates like myself will find that the majority of the topics covered up to the processing chapters to be unnecessary. We already have the equipment and have been taking images. We are wanting to take our images from average to great. I did find the processing chapters useful. I have already incorporated the Photoshop tools into my processing. However, the information relating to Photoshop is limited and leaves me feeling like there is much more that Photoshop can offer.
I gave it 4 stars as the book itself, format and information is great. Most important is to try and determine if you are a beginner or intermediate astrophotographer.

Jerry has done an excellent job with this work. It covers all of the dSLR astrophotography concepts in clear detail. I just wish it were in book rather than CD format. It is hard to leaf through CD's or to recline beside the pool with them. That, plus the high price is what brought me to give it only four stars. The content gets five stars!
