canon powershot digital cameras For Your Reading PleasureRed Light Camera - Bright Way to Raise Revenue?
With an estimated 50,000 heroin addicts and a dwindling population, Baltimore City uses various revenue raising schemes to reach into it's remaining citizen's pockets to try and pay for it's large non productive population. Things such as doubling the tolls on the bridges, implementing new taxes such as the 'cell phone' tax, jacking up the sewage and water fees, etc. However, I think the best scam that they've come up with in a long time is the 'red light' camera scam.
For those who aren't familiar with this, what happens is a camera is placed at a traffic light intersection and usually it's at a place at the bottom of a hill where you're moving along pretty fast and more likely to try and zip through the intersection because to stop you're going out into the intersection anyway. Well, whenever your car passes a spot and the light has turned red, wham!! that's $75 bucks for the city. Or at least half that much, because the firm running this racket gets a large percentage. And now they've come out with digital cameras that don't even flash when you run the light. At least with the flash cameras, you know in an instant when you've crossed the line from law abiding citizen to hardened criminal.
Of course the city uses the argument it's for safety reasons that they've installed literally thousands of them around town..HOGWASH. The lights make the intersections less safe because what happens is as you're approaching the intersection, you're waiting to see if the light is going to change, to see if you should slam on your brakes, or accelerate to about 100MPH to try and beat the light. The last thing you're paying attention to is any other traffic.
No, it's an out and out money grab, and it seems as if the local and state government has no shame when it comes to sticking a gun in it's citizens faces to take some more of their money. You would think that state income tax, and then another piggyback local tax of usually 60%, and all the lottery profits, and all the tolls, and sales tax, and, the rest would be enough? Nah, who am I kidding, they'll just keep coming back for more, constantly coming up with new ways to reach into your pockets. It's a shame that they aren't as creative when solving problems like fixing roads, and things like that, but I guess there just isn't the money in it like that Red Light Camera scam.

Photoshop CS3 Raw: Get the Most Out of the Raw Format with Adobe Photoshop, Camera Raw, and Bridge
Book Description
Because RAW files remain virtually untouched by in-camera processing, working with them has given digital photographers greater flexibility and control during the editing process -- for those who are familiar enough with the format. Camera RAW, the plug in for Adobe Photoshop CS3, has emerged as one of the best and most familiar tools for editing RAW images, and the best way to master this workflow is with Photoshop CS3 RAW.
Award-winning author Mikkel Aaland explores the entire RAW process, from the practical reasons to shoot RAW, to managing the images with the new features of Bridge 2.0 navigation software, to processing your images with the new power of Adobe Camera RAW 4 and Photoshop CS3. The book's unique four-color, photograph-rich design helps you grasp the subject through visual instruction and clear explanation.Photoshop CS3 RAW focuses on Photoshop editing techniques, such as:
- Automating RAW workflow
- Correcting exposures
- Extending exposure range
- Manipulating grayscale
- Working with the DNG open standard
Aaland helps you establish the best tool for each phase of your workflow, from managing shoots to perfecting photos. A digital photography pioneer and author of eight books, including O'Reilly's groundbreaking tutorial
Photoshop Lightroom Adventure, Aaland's trademark ability to teach complicated topics on digital imaging with straightforward, easy-to-follow text makes this book a valuable learning tool for anyone serious about digital photography.
Required reading for professionals and dedicated photo hobbyists alike.
Seven RAW & Photoshop CS3 TIPS by Mikkel Aaland #1) Shoot RAW when technical quality is critical, memory plentiful, and post processing is feasible. Shoot JPEG if capture speed is an issue, camera memory is limited, and processing time is of the essence.
#2) When shooting RAW critical camera settings include ISO (sensor sensitivity), and exposure--even though with a RAW file you have a greater margin of error. Not-so-critical settings include: white balance, sharpening, color space, and the choice between grayscale and color. These settings can all be applied later, using RAW processing software such as Photoshop Lightroom or Adobe Camera Raw.
#3) When shooting RAW with grayscale images in mind, don't bother using different color filters over your lens to produce dramatic black and white effects. Adobe Camera Raw provides graysale conversion which provide color sliders that "dial" in a filter effect.
#4) To recreate accurate colors in your RAW file, when possible, include in the shot a xRite ColorChecker target which cost around $50.
#5) To safeguard your images against unwanted usage, use Adobe Bridge's Photodownloader and have it automatically add a copyright notice to every image downloaded. (The Photodownloader is found under Bridge's File menu,"Get Photos from Camera".)
#6) Create and use different Bridge workspaces to work with your RAW files. For example, the default workspace displays small thumbnail versions of your images so you can see the entire collection at a glance for quick editing. The Horizontal and Vertical Filmstrip presets display large previews of your images for close examination and comparison. You can create custom workspaces as well.
#7) RAW files remain untouched when worked on with Adobe Camera Raw (and Adobe Lightroom), and developing instructions are saved separately, in XMP sidecar files. Avoid confusion, and the possibility of unreadable data, by converting your native RAW files in DNG, an open-standard RAW file format championed by Adobe.

This is a fine introduction into CS3 RAW. It is very clear and easy to understand and follow. If you shoot in RAW and use ACR, this book should be in your library.
Customer Review: Time To Get RAW
'Photoshop CS3 Raw: Get the Most Out of the Raw Format with Adobe Photoshop, Camera Raw, and Bridge' is a great resource for all levels of digital photographers who want to work with images of the highest quality possible. A regular photo who takes images with their camera probably takes them saved in the JPEG file format that has been so widely known and loved for so many years. The problem with this format is that when JPEG is used their is always data lost in the compression used to save the images. This data usually is minimal and not a big deal but if you need the highest quality pictures without any loss or compression at all, you need to save these in a better format. One of those formats is the Adobe RAW format which is the data saved with no data loss at all. These files will be much bigger in size but they also will guarantee that whatever picture(s) you took, you will see everything that was intended to be seen (and saved).
But simply taking the picture isn't enough, as there is tons of post-processing that goes on to get images looking even better than when they were taken. If you want to learn how to edit, crop, saturate, lighten, darken, whatever your heart desires with RAW imgagery, this is a great resource to have!! With nearly 250 pages spread across 12 chapters, this is a great introduction (in full color on glossy paper) to getting the most out of your camera and taking your images from Bs to As!!
This is a great resource to digital editing, my only caveat is that I feel it could be a bit longer. Another 50 pages or so with another example per chapter could have made things even better. A small complaint (and not enough to hurt my rating for the book) but it's worth noting.
If you take RAW images and want to learn how to get more out of them, this book will get you well on your way!!

Customer Review: Not a good choice for class room text.
I'm teaching a beginning digital photography class and this book was the one being used by the college. I went with it. On first read, liked the book but as I tried to structure a methodical, logical class, I found the book to be frustrating. The book jumps from one topic to another, often with no thorough treatment of a subject. Topics are scattered through it. It often promises "we'll cover more on that later" without really covering it well later. The book can't be read by a beginner because terms are often used without being defined or taught. The book assumes you already know about photography. I found I could not assign much reading from the book until 1/2 way through the course when the students had finally been introduced to ISO, shutter speed, f/stops, depth of field, exposures, stops, white balance, etc.
The back 1/2 of the book focuses on Photoshop CS which was not the SW we used in the class. That part of the book was nearly useless for us.
For someone already familiar with photography, this book isn't bad at all. As a text for a class, I'd not recommend it.

Getting Sharper Images, Right From Your Camera
Yes, it's possible to sharpen images digitally post-shoot, but it's always best to get the sharpest shot up front, before your photo is even developed. It's really quite easy to improve the sharpness of your daily shots - just consider these concepts!
1) Use a Tripod, if at all possible
Tripods are by far the best method of ensuring image sharpness right in the camera. The platform created by your tripod stabilizes the camera such that camera shake due to human interference is not an issue, regardless of the level of light available to you, and thus the length of your exposure. As a rule of thumb, a tripod should be used for all exposures longer than 1/30th of a second (e.g. 1/15th of a second or longer is too slow for you to get a crisp shot from handholding - increase your ISO to see if you can get a quicker exposure).
There are many types of tripods available - see my article on Tripods for more information. If you are able to use a tripod then the only shake you have to worry about now is subject shake - flowers moving in the wind, people moving or blinking, etc.
2) Use a Proper Handholding Posture when a tripod is not practical
When tripods are not practical or if you don't have access to one, you should assume the proper handholding posture to minimize camera shake. This method of stabilizing your camera will never be as good as the use of a tripod, but it's not bad - it all depends on whether you have a steady hand when the pressure is on!
a) Hold the camera with both hands such that your right hand has a finger on the shutter release button, and your left hand cradles the camera body (not the lens - it's ok to rest your fingers against the lens, but be sure you don't interfere with auto focus).
b) Press your elbows tightly against your torso and raise the camera to eye level (for SLR) or so that you can see the LCD (digital P&S), but never hold the camera with extended arms as this increases shake.
c) Stabilize your body against a solid object if you can - a wall or lamp post will do.
d) Use the focus lock feature by depressing the shutter release button half way; once the focus is locked, take a deep breath, and depress the button fully to take your shot while exhaling.
3) Use Image Stabilization (IS) or Vibration Reduction (VR) Lenses
Some lenses for SLR cameras include built-in methods of reducing camera shake. If you have such a lens, make sure you enable IS or VR when shooting hand-held. This technology reduces the effects of camera motion on image sharpness by countering the slight lens movements that result in a blurry image. In general, these lenses allow you to hand-hold a camera at a full stop increase over non-IS or non-VR lenses. These lenses are much more expensive than regular lenses, but if you find yourself hand-holding most of your shots with blurry results, it might be worth the investment. See my article on lens characteristics for more information.
4) Increase your shutter speed
The faster your shutter speed, the less aparent camera shake will be. Obviously, if the shutter is left open for 4 seconds then the slightest movement will result in a soft image, even the movement of the shutter release button! Conversely, if the shutter speed is 1/2000th of a seoncd then hardly any movement will result in image blur. As a guideline, at ISO 100, you should restrict your handheld shots to the reciprocal of your lens focal length. For example, with a 60mm lens, you should not hand-hold any shots that require a slower shutter speed than 1/60th second. (Of course, with an image-stabilized lens, that rule becomes 1/30th second.)
If you are stuck handholding your camera at shutter speeds that are slower than the reciprocal, then you should use flash or increase your ISO setting. The lower the ISO setting, the lower the noise, so it's always best to stick with ISO 100; however, to reduce camera shake, it may be worth the trade-off to raise the ISO to 200, 400, or even higher. It all depends on your camera and how much noise it introduces at certain ISO levels. Some cameras are better than others, but some photographers have steadier hands than others!
5) Check your AF (auto-focus) sensors to confirm area of highest focus
When using auto-focus mode, most cameras confirm with tiny red lights which part of the image is in sharpest focus before taking the shot. Be sure your camera has the same subject in mind that you do, or else your main subject may not be emphasized the way you had imagined. If the sensor picking up the area of focused is not hitting the area you want, it's best to set it manually. You can do this by disabling auto-focus, or by recomposing your scene such that the correct area is selected, depressing the shutter release button half way to keep the exposure locked, and returning to your original composition.
6) Use continuous shooting mode
By taking two or more shots of the same scene in rapid succession (by keeping the shutter release button depressed), you remove the effect that pressing the shutter release button can have on camera shake. In other words, your second shot (and any subsequent shots, until you release the button) will not experience any shake due to vibration of the shutter release since the first shot took the brunt of it.
7) Use moderate apertures
The rule here is that your lens does its best focusing when set to two stops smaller than its widest aperture. For example, if your lens' widest aperture is f/2.8, then it will produce the sharpest images (not at f/4) at f/5.6. Even high quality lenses with aspheric and low-dispersion glass elements may not produce their sharpest images at their widest apertures.

Magic Lantern Guides: Canon EOS 40D (Magic Lantern Guides)
I am surpised by the less than enthusiastic reviews of this book. I have owned all the Digital Rebels to date and a few months back bought a 40D. This book has been an excellent description and discussion of the various features of the 40D. I especially like Rob Shepards approach of giving detailed descriptions often followed up by a clearly differentiated "insider view" opinion of where and when he finds a particular feature useful. True, a larger format and color might be prettier but I have found this to be the book that makes me comfortable with this excellent camera. This will be the book that travels with the camera.

A Featured underwater cameras ArticleGetting Sharper Images, Right From Your Camera

For example, if your lens' widest aperture is f/2.8, then it will produce the sharpest images (not at f/4) at f/5.6. Even high quality lenses with aspheric and low-dispersion glass elements may not produce their sharpest images at their widest apertures.

casio digital cameras have always fascinated me. This is the initiative I needed in getting this article written on casio digital cameras, to let this fascination fascinate others.
A casio digital cameras Artilce for Your ViewingTop of the Line Digital Cameras
If you think that digital cameras are for snapshots only, then you obviously haven't heard about SLR (Single Lens Reflex) digital cameras. SLR is a type of camera which has one lens for composing the frame and capturing the image. SLR cameras are also known as TTL (through-the-lens) cameras.
An SLR camera displays an image through the viewfinder that is exactly the same image as the camera sees and is exactly the same image that the camera is going to record when you release the shutter.
An SLR camera provides a much more accurate image through the viewfinder than a digital camera produces on its LCD because the LCD does not faithfully reproduce the colors and light intensity that is actually entering the camera.
The top of the line SLR digital cameras rival the best film-based SLR cameras and are designed for serious hobbyists and professional photographers. Digital SLR cameras are much larger, bulkier, and heavier than traditional digital cameras.
The SLR uses a mirror that is located behind the lens as well as an optical device known as a pentaprism to channel the light that enters the camera's lens to the optical finder. When you release the shutter the mirror moves out of the way and the image is captured in the same way as any digital camera.
The better digital SLR cameras let you mount different lenses just like their film-based counterparts do. Many of your existing 35mm lens may be compatible with a digital SLR. If you have a large lens collection then you should definitely look for a digital SLR that is compatible with them.
Because the digital SLR cameras are more professional, they come with a hefty price tag. A 6-megapixel Nikon D100 runs around $2,000 and the 11-megapixel Canon 1D runs near $8,000. This is for the camera body only and does not include a lens! This is why I mentioned earlier that you should look for a digital camera that will mount your existing lens collection. Just a good quality zoom lens can run you at least $3,000 and can climb as high as $10,000 depending upon the features!
Of course, there are also starter-priced digital SLR cameras available. The Olympus E-20N, a 5.0-megapixel SLR camera, which includes a non-replaceable lens that is capable of duplicating a 35 mm to 140 mm lens, runs around $3500.
These prices are not out of line if you make your living shooting pictures. You can actually create additional revenue streams when you shoot digital pictures, instead of film-based ones, by offering image enhancement options and all sorts of digital FX options for thee prospective bride and groom's on their treasured wedding album.
If all of this sounds a bit too expensive for your blood, then you'll probably find all of the digital camera that you'll ever need way down in the $99 to $500 price range and you'll never have to worry about buying extra lenses. Digital SLR cameras aren't for everyone but, if they're for you, then there are plenty of models to look at. SOme of the best are made by Canon, Olympus and Nikon which are familiar names in the photography world.

Customer Review: Get A different camera
I bought this camera for my son. i was very disapointed with it. The controls are nice, but the shutter button doesn't always take a picture when you press it. The resolution of the pictures is horrible. the pictures do not match up with what you see in the viewfinder. it holds 1000 pictures, and the numbers are very large on the lcd screen. i expected much better and ended up returning it.
Customer Review: Typical Cheap Kid's Digital Camera
This is a typical cheap kid's digital camera. It has extremely poor resolution. The battery compartment was difficult to open and close. The USB port had a sliding door but such a tiny space you can't get the plug in with enough room before the door slides shut. The camera locked up while reviewing pictures and the computer recognized the camera but could not access the pictures. I would spend a little more money and get a real adult low-cost camera.

A Featured camera wireless ArticleChoosing Digital Camera Wisely
Earlier than the present, taking pictures that will cater to the photographers own preference and style is a very meticulous process. Most of the time, it involves a series of shots to ensure its aesthetic beauty and accuracy. In order to seize a perfect picture, a photographer has to waste rolls of film, but not anymore. With the arrival of digital cameras, it gave photographers and amateurs in the field of photography an air of thrill and a deep breath of relief. No longer difficult is to achieve the right angle, perspective, color and engrossing image. This is because you can easily delete a bad picture right after you have taken it. However, as the years go by, expert photographers realized the flaws in some digital cameras. They complained of the low-image resolution, deficient camera features and limited color quality. Some manufacturers, on the other side, have realized the increasing demand of the photographers so they added tools and features to answer the needs. Not all digital cameras are created equal. So many digital cameras are available in the market and its so hard to choose which one suits our wants and needs. If you are unaware of some vital information, you can be an easy prey to defraud. Better yet to know the ins and outs of the digital camera interface. If you do not know what to choose and how to do it, here are some tips to do it: 1. Decide what type of camera you need. If youre into interchangeable-lens photography, you better choose an interchangeable-lens digital SLR. If you want a handy travel-wise design, go for an advanced compact camera. 2. Decide what size most of your pictures should be. Higher resolution cameras make larger digital files, thus, if you want bigger enlargements, you can have high resolution cameras. 3. Camera should give you SLR-like control to give you a good direct over the range of exposure on the photos youre taking. 4. Zoom potential must be unlimited with pro SLRs. The standard optical 3x zoom has been extended by some camera models. A camera with big lens can be indispensable in detailed picture taking. 5. Compatibility of your camera and lenses should be checked before purchasing it. You can opt to advanced compacts to optimize your focal length. 6. For you to be able to take advantage of the close-up photography, you can switch to macro. 7. Photographers must understand the ISO equivalency. Multiple ISO levels gives you the ability to select ISO equivalence or it can automatically select for you. Be familiar with extra-sensitivity and noise-reduction to improve the over-all quality of your pictures. 8. Auto white balance is the one responsible in controlling color shifting. This is done by making the brightest parts as pure as white. Some of the cameras have common presets. You can purchase the likes for easy camera management. 9. Another thing that you have to decide is the flash. Most of the cameras today come with built-in flash. Nevertheless, external flash, delivers more power and versatility because it gives off bounce flash to get hard-to-reach areas. 10. To free you from any regret, you can try the camera before purchasing it. These guides can help you select the best digital camera. Cameras need not be expensive. They just have to be flexible and precise!

Maricon WilliamsTo master digital technology, one has to be knowledgeable of the fundamentals of photography like the depth of field and exposure of the subject. A Photoshop guru can save an otherwise lousy shot. Believe me it can make a wild difference between a poorly taken original image. Photoshop mastery can give it life, spice and character! You must be aware that old techniques most of the time, is lacking thus, we have to incorporate various and recent techniques in order to come up with a fabulous creation that can transcend limitations. When you are taking a subject which has strong light and deep shadows, you have to capture both the details and the range of tones. You can do it by taking two or more different shots or images. When your subject is not moving, it is easy for you to have several original and identical images. Then seize different exposures. After that, you can combine them together to give an atmosphere of transparency. Bear in mind though, that you have to know the exposure latitude. If you are not sure about what you are doing, just bracket the exposures to capture the highlights and shadows. There can be a situation where you cant get the entire image in focus. This may be frustrating but with the help of a digital processing this can be resolved. The remedy to this is to take two images and combine them in Photoshop. Photoshop will do the magic to make the image clear and convincing. To do this, you must take an image focused toward the foreground and the other image favoring the background. Leave some overlapping details in the middle where the two images are supposed to meet. Another alternative is to throw the background out of focus and also take a close-up image of an image. If you combine both images, the result will center on the close-up image however, it will create a certain background that will complement the focal image. The essential elements of this technique are the combination of a small aperture subject to a wide-aperture one and then combining it digitally. If you havent try this, you have to find time to explore this technique and feel the amazing tickle of your masterpiece. Let us take advantage of the digital change. It is actually making a whole new difference in the photography world. Your artistic side may be telling you to capture the details and relay the message. Customer Review: Posting my review in the 8GB though I bought a 4.
My 4GB SDHC works perfectly in my new camera. I just point and click, and am using a Samsung S85. I do not take enough pictures nor am I skilled enough in photography to justify purchasing a DSLR.
The card however works perfectly, and seems to be fast. (Haven't ran any benchmarks)
Throwing my 4GB review here, to counter the uninformed poster that gave it a 2 star because he wanted an SD card, and not an SDHC.
Customer Review: extremely fast
I am using this sd card with my asus eee. I ve another 1G from another manufacturer. I didn't care about the speed when I was buying that one. Because it was for a cam and speed does not matter much if you are buying a sd for a cam. But when it comes to a asus eee, things become different. I played two movies consequtively using this sd card. There was no sign of a lag. I tried to play one of the movies with the old one, It didnt be able to play just one move smoothly.
So its your decision, If you need speed, pay more, buy this one, if you need storage space, you can find larger sd cards with considerably lower prices

A Featured camera surveillance Article Is A Hidden Nanny Camera The Right Way To Go?
There are very few reasons why you should not get a hidden nanny camera and tons of reasons why you should get one. A hidden nanny camera can save the life of your child and for that reason alone I think that it is a very good idea for all parents to consider getting one, whether they actually have a nanny or if they just hire a babysitter from time to time. Kids are delicate and they need to be treated properly. That means that they need to be treated with as much respect as adults and they need to be protected form any neglect or violence. And the fact of the matter is hat you don?t know what goes on in your home when you are not there. Even if your child does not have any cuts or bruises that does not mean that he or she is not being abused. Only a good quality hidden nanny camera is going to show you what the nanny is doing when you are away and it is just the nanny and the baby.
Do you know how often your nanny or babysitter yells at your child or children? Probably not, it is not like you can ask him or her, the nanny is obviously not going to tell you that all she does is yell all day long! And if your child is very young he or she is not going to be any help either, but a hidden nanny camera would be. When you have a hidden nanny camera in your home nothing is going to be a secret any longer, you will know exactly what is happening when you are not there. Either you will finally have your mind put to rest about the quality of care that this nanny is providing or you will find out that she is terrible and that it is time to get a new one. Either way you win, you simply cannot go wrong when you purchase a hidden nanny camera.
There are a few different kinds of hidden nanny camera on the market today. Some are as small as pins and they can be hidden absolutely anywhere and the nanny will never detect it. There was a time when they were all hidden in teddy bears, well that is done, now you can hide them in pictures, fire alarms, in the VCR, absolutely anywhere that will give you a good view of the room is a great place to put your hidden nanny camera. And since they are all so tiny now this is beyond simple to do. Having a good hidden nanny camera is the only way to know that your child is safe when you are not home, safety is the most important thing for your child, the most important. So take care with the life and wellbeing of your baby and get a hidden nanny camera to use, and then use it!

Customer Review: Nuts and Bolts of Canon Powershots
I love this book because it explains the nuts and bolts of the Powershot series cameras. It has great explanations and sample photos to illustrate each of the techniques. I reference this book all the time and take pictures using the tips learned. This was a smart purchase. I highly recommend this book.
Customer Review: Disappointed
All the other Digital Field Guides I've gotten have been great, but I think they tried to cover too many different cameras in one book. The menues tend to be different in many of the cameras but the direction paragraphs aren't labeled which cameras they are for unless there is a special paragraph for one particular camera. I didn't find it any help at all.

Customer Review: Great for anyone at any level
This is my favorite photography book by far. While I feel I have an eye for design and color, photography has always seemed intimidating to me. The author of this book, Erin Manning, writes as though she is a friend and mentor guiding you through the realm of digital photography. While digital photography may be old hat to many - especially the techno savvy - not everybody is adept (and from what I have experienced, most are not in every capacity). Erin leads us through the basics, then goes on to explain things even the most "camera competent", will find utterly engaging. Erin pulls you in and brings out the innate artist in all of us, no matter what level.....and for those of you that actually do understand the art of photography, Erin will only enlighten you more. This is an "easy read" as it is written as though a friend is speaking to you, acknowledging your expertise while giving you a boost where you need it. A great book that I will definitely pass along (and that I will constantly refer to in the future). Good job, Erin. Best of luck.
Customer Review: Excellent primer for the beginning portrait shooter.
This is the second book of Wiley Publishing's Photo Workshop series that I've read. My first was on Composition, and I loved it! Their installment on portrait and candid photography was a close second. I've learned that these workshop books truly do stand on their own. Much like the 'Dummies' series, each book is individually authored, and as such each has a unique feel. Again like 'Dummies' books, the Photo Workshop series adheres to standards for layout and tips.
The author, Erin Manning, is a full-time pro photographer in L.A. who teaches and stars in a photo how-to television series. Erin covers all the nuts and bolts of portrait shooting. What equipment is needed, and how to get by with what you have. But the best information I came away with was how to 'read' light in everyday situations. To understand how light is falling on your subject and the effect it will have. Erin says that If you get your lighting worked out early-on in a session, you're free to pay attention to your subject. I like Erin's philosophy of identifying the key attributes of a person and bringing those qualities out in their photos.
Portrait and Candid Photography is another great 'course-in-a-book from Wiley. It might be a bit basic for the intermediate to advanced user. I give it four out of five.
Photoshop Lightroom Adventure: Mastering Adobe's next-generation tool for digital photographers
Photoshop Lightroom Adventure: Mastering Adobe's next-generation tool for digital photographers
This beautifully illustrated and eminently practical book is the first to offer a complete tour of Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 1.2, the integrated digital photography workflow application that allows serious photographers to import, select, develop and showcase large volumes of digital images. Augmented by photos and case studies from a demanding road test in Iceland, award-winning photographer Mikkel Aaland explains how Lightroom 1.2 can improve the way you work. After watching -- and often helping -- Adobe create Lightroom entirely from the ground up, Aaland (author of Photoshop CS2 RAW) was ready to see how well it would do in the field. He organized a group of 12 top-notch photographers for a trek to "Nature's Light Room", the pristine Icelandic landscape where each summer day is bathed in 22 hours of horizontal light -- and where the only studio was Lightroom on a laptop. In Photoshop Lightroom Adventure, Aaland uses hands-on knowledge from the trip to demonstrate how Lightroom 1.2 can help you create the best possible image under any conditions. This unique tutorial walks you step-by-step through Lightroom's:
- Library module for uploading, sorting, tagging, ranking and adding keywords to your images
- Develop module with Adobe Camera RAW for complete non-destructive color and tonal adjustments
- Slideshow module, where you select and size images, and export the show to HTML, Flash, or PDF formats
- Print module, which includes several templates for printing contact sheets or full images
- Web module, where you can create Flash or HTML web galleries
With many gorgeous examples shot in the soft natural light of Iceland, this book lets you see the results for yourself. Mikkel Aaland's trademark ability to teach complicated topics on digital imaging with straightforward, easy-to-follow text makes this book a valuable learning tool for anyone serious about digital photography. This is not an update of previous Lightroom versions, but the first book that's completely up-to-date for Lightroom 1.2.
Customer Review: Adobe Lightroom Adventure
I know some reviewers have critized this guide as being neither fish nor fowl, but I think it is a worthwhile purchase. The photos of Iceland are the icing on the cake--the text is clear and informative. I was not sure I really wanted to purchase the program until I got a better grasp of its potential; this book provides the overview I needed, and is sufficiently detailed that I should be able to use the program effectively. The page layout is quite good and the photos really are outstanding. Highly recommended!
Customer Review: Flawed, but educating and fun
As far as the book goes, its a fairly conventional tutorial - but the layout makes it stand out. Filled with colorful pictures on glossy paper, Lightroom Adventure is part coffee-table book, part technology tutorial. Its pages are divided horizontally into thirds: a third is devoted to text while the other two thirds are reserved for screen caps and photographs.
Its a format that is hugely engaging to read. Periodically Aaland will break with a two page splash of a particulary striking photograph shot by someone on the team. It is embellished with something personal about the photographer and the circumstances under which the picture was taken. The pictures may interrupt the flow but actually do a stellar job of integrating the book under the Icelandic Expedition theme.

A Featured camera surveillance ArticleIs A Hidden Nanny Camera The Right Way To Go?
About the Author: Au Pairs and Nannies: Looking after the welfare of your child.
